The definition of successful leadership has evolved over the last decade and will continue to change. What do you need to develop to become a successful leader?
Successful leaders innovate, collaborate, and consistently uphold integrity. They invest their time to help communities prosper and build long-lasting change.
When I joined [firm]’s 250-person Global Research department, our Commodity Strategy team’s energy work only covered oil and natural gas. To me, this was an opportunity to build macro clean energy strategy to better serve our 15,000+ global clients and help [firm] grow as an energy transition thought leader. 100+ weekly reports, countless new market models and forecasts, 5 intensive long-form research notes, dozens of investor meetings, and multiple 250+ client presentations later, I have formally created a new [firm] research vertical for macro clean energy and climate policy that brings in profitable trades. In January, I will co-lead a delegation of portfolio managers through the Middle East for meetings focused on the energy transition. It is uniquely challenging to be entrepreneurial within the labyrinthine corporate structure of our bank. Yet, with my team’s support, I climbed over each hurdle smarter and more open-minded than before. For future sustainability I am in the process of helping hire a new teammate focused on these subjects so the bank will remain positioned for this thought leadership when I head to business school.
The Berkeley Haas MBA program is a launchpad for students to grow into successful leaders that prioritize collective good above themselves, which is the community I want to embed myself in. The Haas MBA would further help me grow by providing the opportunity to learn the key pillars of organizational success such as strategy, finance and accounting, operational effectiveness, people development, and more. Moreover, through the Energy Institute and the Berkeley Energy Resources Collaborative, the Haas MBA is uniquely positioned to be a foundation and springboard to my career at the nexus of clean energy and business.
