Dear Mr. Rod Garcia,
I am eager to earn a place within the MIT Sloan MBA Program. I believe that my experience developing creative whatzit industry strategies and leading global programs that improve ethical and labor standards will add value to the Sloan community.
My experience leading whatzit strategy during Monstermart’s expansion from e-commerce to a global omni-channel company has taught me to be creative, even at the risk of failure. During our retail launch, the chain required a 12-week timeframe to approve in-store displays, which didn’t leave us enough time to manufacture our innovative displays before the launch. I led a team to define a creative approach to the supply chain, utilizing production in Sri Lanka and the United States and leveraging different production methods to expand capacity. We succeeded in manufacturing the displays for all 9,800 stores, three weeks ahead of schedule.
Today, I lead Monstermart’s Responsible Sourcing Program implementation, which seeks to impact labor standards globally. After seeing the harsh conditions at some of the whatzit factories I visited in Vietnam, where workers were over-worked, underpaid and unhappy, I decided that our suppliers should instead become a positive influence in their communities. After winning approval from Monstermart’s CEO, I am leading an international cross-functional team drafting our Supplier Code of Conduct, to improve working and environmental conditions at our Vietnamese, Chinese, Venezuelan, and US factories.
At MIT Sloan, I hope to learn from world-renowned System Dynamics experts, to build on my operations experience and leverage supply chains to drive social change.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Munster
