Although his pure business background is limited, his strong analytical and scientific training will serve him well, allowing him to question all underlying assumptions and provide a novel perspective in the classroom. Communication skills and Teamwork
He has excellent communication skills and can easily transcend cultural barriers given his unique experiences working with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures and nations. He is a polished communicator across all levels both within GreenWorld and across industries, speaking at numerous international conferences and has been an invited speaker at key meetings by the Rwandan and Turkish governments. Further, Michael has extensive experience working as a team player and facilitating stakeholder workshops across the African continent, skills that will serve him well within the diverse Kellogg community.
Community Service
Michael has a long history of service to the community around him, beginning in college coaching 9-10 year old boys in Keyland, and continuing to this day with his involvement with advising local conservation groups based in East Africa and the Balkans. In addition to providing strategic guidance for strengthening projects on the ground; he has raised nearly $400,000 for these organizations over the past five years. This experience will serve him well with assisting an NGO with the Kellogg Corps.

I am accustomed to team environments from my experience working as an analyst in banking. My job has required the development of analytical and technical skills that would be of value to the many teams I would work with during my time at Kellogg. I am also able to use these skills while working in stressful situations and meeting tight deadlines. In addition my analytical and technical skills, I have strong interpersonal skills that contribute greatly to team morale. When deadlines approach and tension levels are high, I never abandon my genuine sense of enthusiasm and optimism. My “can-do” attitude, frequently accompanied by a basket of home-made French pastries and a warm smile, would brighten any team situation at Kellogg and motivate others to successfully complete the task at hand.
In spite of a very demanding 70/80 hour work week schedule, I have dedicated time to cultural and philanthropic activities in the community. I know that I will be able to balance the rigor of the academic curriculum at Kellogg with my involvement in extra-curricular and social activities. I would pursue my wide range of interests as an active member in many of the student clubs, including Business with a Heart, the Arts & Culture Club, and the European Business Club, in addition to starting an opera club to take advantage of the nearby Chicago Lyric Opera.
The greatest way in which I would be an asset to fellow Kellogg students is through the insight I can provide on cultural diversity. Drawing from my own experiences as a student at a foreign institution, I will be able to interact comfortably with the numerous international students attending Kellogg and facilitate their integration into every aspect of the school’s community.
While I know my peers and I will learn a great deal from each other in the classroom, I am committed to extending the collaborative learning experience beyond academic related activities. One of the ways in which I would promote collaborative learning at Kellogg is by organizing informal language exchange coffee hours. This would provide interested students the opportunity to practice their foreign language skills, or provide foreign students the opportunity to interact with other students in their native language. Also, my passion for exploring new places will encourage my peers to take advantage of life outside the campus in Evanston. The city of Chicago provides an exciting backdrop for building new relationships and sharing experiences and ideas. I would use the city’s numerous museums, restaurants, and sporting events as a means of engaging classmates and uncovering points of common interest that may not have been apparent otherwise.

Collectively, her above and beyond dedication to the Net Impact and Shaping Key communities presented her with an expansive network of social entrepreneurs to guide her in her efforts to launch a social enterprise.

Secondly, with extensive experience in correspondent clearing, she can educate her classmates on this lesser-known part of the financial services industry; especially since its importance has grown in the wake of the financial meltdown as major investment banks realized the value of this less volatile and more stable revenue stream. Her product development, project management, and marketing skills from work, quantitative focus in undergraduate studies, 720 GMAT score, and extensive activities are proof that she can handle the academic rigor and demanding extracurricular activities at Kellogg.

For example, he spent a summer in a traditional German home, ran a marathon to promote cancer awareness, annually travels to one of America’s greatest golf courses, and this summer he will return to Spain to “run with the bulls” in Pamplona.
David is outgoing, personable, and down-to-earth; traits that he utilizes to motivate, challenge, and teach his colleagues and peers. As Senior Associate at TTA, David has trained two junior Associates, teaching them how to analyze and evaluate investment opportunities, conduct due diligence, and build the financial models used to evaluate investment returns. Outside of work, David has shown a similar desire to share his experiences and contribute to others’ success. For example, David serves as a mentor with LMU’s Neeley Fellows Program, helping an undergraduate business student develop a career path and professional network. In analyzing Kareem’s candidacy at Kellogg, it is very apparent that he will bring a global perspective to the incoming class of 20XX. Kareem spent his early childhood in Argentina before immigrating to the United States with his Indian family. Kareem’s extensive work experience in Berlin (where he spent five weeks in 20XX) and London (where he spent another five weeks in 20XX) further adds to his global repertoire. Kareem will be able to utilize his experiences to make meaningful contributions to class discussions, team projects, and the overall environment at Kellogg. Furthermore, his international experience will ensure that his ideas are applicable in the global marketplace.
A successful Kellogg applicant needs to be cognizant of his or her community. Through Kareem’s work at the YMCA, Hope for Haiti, and the Upstart Corporation, Kareem has demonstrated his willingness to volunteer. At the YMCA, Kareem teaches basketball to young kids. Due to his leadership skills, he was selected as a head basketball coach for the youth league. Kareem’s work at the YMCA has allowed him to interact with children at a critical stage of their lives. At Hope for Haiti, an organization devoted to providing assistance to the people of Haiti, Kareem assisted in the development of a fund raising methodology, helping to produce over 30 potential sources for funding. His efforts led to the budget increasing from $1M to $3.5M. At the Upstart Corporation, an organization facilitating the redevelopment of Boston, Kareem researched and discovered twelve highly lucrative funding sources. Kareem will be able to utilize his fundraising experiences at Hope for Haiti and the Upstart Corporation to help run conferences at Kellogg. Kareem has also demonstrated his willingness to give back to his alma mater. He devotes his time to the MIT Alumni Society, where he interviews high school applicants as part of the Undergraduate Admissions process. Kareem has a clear grasp of his career goals and has stated that he seeks to become a Vice President of Product Management at a mid-size enterprise software company. Based on his work experience, we can see that Kareem has taken the requisite steps to achieving this goal. Kareem has gained experience in the product development, client services, and pre-sales aspects of running a software company. In addition, Kareem has taken on a leadership role on numerous projects, both in development and professional services. This has allowed him to make key decisions while interacting with a number of different parties, including sales, collateral managers, IT professionals, marketers and product managers. This well-rounded view of the software business will enhance Kareem’s ability to provide a meaningful context to his views in both classroom discussions and team projects at Kellogg.
Based on his work experience, it is clear that Kareem has reached a point in his career where an MBA at Kellogg will be critical to helping him reach his future goals. In order to become an effective product manager at a mid-size company, Kareem needs to learn how he can market and design a software product in order to appeal to both existing customers and untapped markets. The Hammond International division has grown from 20 to 45 people during Kareem’s tenure. In addition, the division’s internal processes are slowly being integrated with the rest of Algorithmics, the parent company. Kareem would benefit from learning how to efficiently handle acquisition integration at a company experiencing rapid change and growth. An MBA from Kellogg will help Kareem address the areas where he is lacking and provide him with the basic business fundamentals in management, marketing, and finance that he needs to succeed.
Kareem has the intellectual abilities required of our students. His GMAT score of 760 places him at the 99th percentile, well above the average range of students at Kellogg. Judging by Kareem’s collegiate and work experience, he shouldn’t have any problems handling the rigorous quantitative curriculum at Kellogg. In order to prepare for his studies at Kellogg, Kareem will be taking an Introduction to Finance course this spring at NYU. By enrolling in this course, Kareem has proactively taken a necessary step toward preparing for the rigors of the Kellogg curriculum. In addition, Kareem has taken and excelled in numerous quantitative focused courses while pursuing a Computer Science and Engineering degree at the MIT. He excelled in his two semesters of Calculus for Engineering, where he received an A- and a B+. In addition, he took the Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science I and II courses, in which he received an A- and an A+ respectively. These two courses, taught by Dr. Richard Halsted, were featured in a Boston Globe article entitled “Tough Love”, an article about the toughest college classes in the country.
There is also a significant quantitative aspect to Kareem’s current role at Hammond International. He performs verification testing when implementing the Hammond International product. In order to do this, he performs financial operations such as Coupon Payment, Cash Rebate, and Security PV calculations. Kareem’s superior marks earned at MIT in combination with his work experience provide a direct positive indication that he will excel at the quantitative portion of his Kellogg education.
Kareem has proven that he has the requisite skills to thrive in a team environment. His position at Hammond International requires the ability to motivate and interact with others. In addition, Kareem’s responsibilities at the YMCA necessitate that he instill the importance of teamwork in his students. Already, Selma shows a strong and impressive track-record for professional success; exemplified by her rapid promotion earned ahead of schedule. Selma will definitely bring a unique perspective on technology, retail operations, and international business to her teams at Kellogg.
Rationale for an MBA: I applaud Selma’s unfettered commitment to her career goals of pursuing a strategic planning position after Kellogg and ultimately moving into a leadership position at a luxury goods retailer. It is great to see that she recognizes the limitations of her current consulting role and that she is focused on moving into the retail and luxury goods industry. I commend her awareness of the areas in which she needs to improve in order to achieve these goals: building a foundation in business, expertise in marketing and consumer behavior, and refining her leadership and team skills. Passion for being a strong leader: It is apparent that Selma genuinely works hard to lead change and make a positive impact. While implementing a markdown optimization tool, she took the initiative to earn the respect and support of her client team and lead them through a successful implementation. Her ability to persuade the SVP of marketing to support her recommendations also demonstrates that she not only is aware of her surroundings but that she can easily adapt her communication style to create more effective messages for her audience. By being elected to leadership positions, such as Dartmouth volleyball team captain, her peers acknowledge Selma’s leadership skills, determination and positive attitude. Academic performance: Clearly, Selma is not shy of academic rigor, nor is she a quitter. Selma attended Dartmouth and chose a difficult dual course of study, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. She had a difficult time in her electrical engineering classes, which resulted in a lower GPA. She could have opted out of the dual program, but did not want to quit without striving to accomplish a demanding goal. With her busy academic schedule, volunteering, and leading the volleyball team, Selma learned that there are limits to taking on too much and as a result, she learned how to better manage expectations and prioritize her time in her consulting career. With her quantitative education, technical work experience, and improved ability to manage her time, I am confident that she can handle the academics and activities. Her success on the GMAT, a score of 720, reinforces my conviction that Selma can excel academically at Kellogg.

Over the years, our goal at Kellogg has been to create a community of diverse, talented students who will apply their acquired business tools and knowledge to realize their vision and to transform the lives of others, and we have found such a candidate. His career goal of fostering economic development in India by incubating technology companies is inspired by his experience. His vision of introducing the “startup” mentality and spurring India to become comfortable with creating business opportunities, as described in Essay 1, is ambitious and reflects the desire to make his mark on the lives of others. He knows his path to achieve his long-term goal, and his crisp vision and Kellogg education will allow him to succeed.
Academically, I have no doubt that he will succeed in our rigorous curriculum. His stellar undergraduate and graduate GPA along with a strong GMAT show that he is dedicated to academics. His past academic performance also predicts his success and willingness to work hard in the business program. That said, he already has an advanced degree but he strategically planned it in order to understand technology in depth and use this knowledge later in his long-term career.
His professional experience to date has been with several startup companies. He chose to work for startups to learn a “startup” mentality. Such a choice aligns well with his aspirations to eventually incubate technology companies. Initially I was concerned about seeing so many companies in his resume. However, Essay 4E addresses this concern and shows how enduring the ups and downs of the technology economy was a growth experience for him. He has learned to adapt quickly to new situations and environments, and is readily willing to step out of his comfort zone. He has since thrived at LINKA Communications, as evident from his promotion to a Senior Design Engineer position with the increasing responsibilities of leading projects and managing teams. He has proven his project management skills and ability to lead cross-functional teams, and shown strong leadership at work when others did not always step forward to assume that role as explained in Essay 4D. In short, while we receive a lot of interest from applicants with engineering backgrounds, it seems that Sean’s progressively increasing responsibilities have covered a wide range of business fundamentals, including project management, strategy, marketing and product development.
Sean will enhance the aggregate diversity of Kellogg’s student body. Sean has a unique international background. He describes his experience growing up in India and traveling through Western Europe, which shows he has seen the world and has a unique perspective on people, cultures, and religions. He mentioned how his struggle as a gay Muslim man dealing with contradictions of his own life has let him to appreciate others’ unique qualities. From a diversity point of view, he seems to have developed a worldview that incorporates various aspects of his life experiences. I anticipate that Sean with his exposure to culture, study, work and travel will bring tremendous diversity to our class.
At Kellogg, we have always sought students who give back to the community. Sean has a wide range and depth of volunteer activities, which both demonstrates a balance between work and life and a desire to help his community. His mentor positions with Rainto High School and Big Brother Big Sisters shows his initiative to help others. His service as a member of Board of Directors for SWAN where he has provided his analytical and project management skills to establish core strategies shows his ability to lead a non-technical team outside of a work environment. His involvement with community demonstrates leadership skills, and a willingness to lead change and empower individuals.
