Briefly summarise your current (or most recent) job, including the nature of work, etc.
I work for Company X, the biggest container-shipping company in the world. I am a Second Engineer, second-in-command in the engine room of our container ships, and I report directly to the Chief Engineer. This is a management-level role; I supervise the entire operation of the engine room and other technical aspects of the ship, and manage a 15-person engine room crew consisting of engineers, mechanics, electricians and trainees.
My key responsibility includes day-to-day operation and maintenance of the ship’s 85,000 kilowatt propulsion plant, to keep the ship running on schedule and within budget. Under my leadership, our ship, the USS Titanic, has risen to optimum condition; breakdowns have declined, saving $900,000 over the previous years’ operating costs.
Another important aspect of my job is people management. I keep the engine room crew motivated, safety-conscious and ready for any contingency. I also train my crew for emergencies such as fire, flooding, grounding and terrorist attacks. In addition, I plan for periodic testing and maintenance of the safety equipment on each ship, ensuring that the equipment is ready for use at all times.
The pollution prevention equipment onboard ship comes under my supervision, as I am the environmental officer onboard ship. It is my responsibility to ensure that the ship is in compliance with global environmental regulations. In the two years of my command, the quality audits by international surveyors assigned the Titanic the highest rating for environmental protection.
