Leadership-Focused Essay: What experiences have shaped who you are, how you invest in others, and what kind of leader you want to become? (253/250 words)

Learning from my father’s community spirit, alongside my international college studies, taught me that successful leadership means recruiting the best, most diverse teams, and investing back into communities.

I grew up on a farm in a small Indian village. My father died suddenly when I was 17 and within days, leadership of the family farm devolved to me. I couldn’t manage it alone, so I recruited eight employees from nearby villages, investing in their education, technical training and family support. This became the greatest leadership lesson of my life, teaching me the importance of knowledge sharing and efficient resource optimization.

One of my father’s defining characteristics was his commitment to the community: for 30 years, he always donated 50% of our annual revenue to local charities. I continued his tradition by investing in a regional free clinic, local primary schools, and annual college scholarships for promising students. Shouldering this responsibility so young built my social conscience and the confidence to lead, wherever my career would take me.

My undergraduate studies at India’s National Institute of Technology, my first exposure to diversity, also shaped me. Coming from a rural village, I collaborated with international students from China, the Middle East, and Africa. In our vigorous classroom discussions, I learned to listen proactively and disagree respectfully, within a rich mix of religions, perspectives and cultures.

Post-MBA, as a global CPG executive, I want to build on my local, international and professional experiences to become a leader of impactful teams in thriving communities.
