Describe the initiatives you have taken over the past two years to develop professionally and personally. What motivated you to take those initiatives?
To achieve my goal of becoming a successful venture capitalist, I need to be an effective communicator, have strong business acumen, management skills, and a broad network. With determination and perseverance, I have grown and matured by working on these specific skills at work and through volunteer activities. I am now an effective cross-cultural communicator, adaptable to various scenarios, with a broader network in Silicon Valley, and have excellent project management experience.
In order to refine my management skills, in the last few years I have taken every opportunity to lead significant projects and cross-functional teams to expose myself to a variety of management scenarios. At work, I deepened my cross-cultural business understanding by leading an outsourcing feasibility study with a Taiwanese host foundry. My interest in the business side of the technology sector led me to undertake a significant shift in my core responsibilities in early 2005. When a job in technical marketing became available, I was seeking to refine my broader business skills, and eagerly seized this opportunity. Technical marketing has taught me the importance of integrating our products with customer needs, and developed my understanding of the intricacies of the customer relationship. My outlook has now changed; I believe that no matter how great a company’s product is, a lack of strong business strategy and thoughtful marketing will hinder success in the market.
A venture capitalist must communicate clearly and effectively to investors and potential customers. In order to become a refined public speaker, I joined a Toastmasters Club two years ago. A few years ago, speaking in front of strangers meant sweaty palms and occasionally choking on my own words. Determined to overcome this weakness, I volunteered to speak at every opportunity. Today, dealing with customers or presenting to the management is a jitter-free pleasant experience.
As a venture capitalist, I will need skills to lead teams of people with different skills and backgrounds. To hone my leadership skills in a variety of settings, I accepted the role on the governing Board of Directors for WLT Nature Education, a nonprofit organization. I took on this role to augment my team building skills outside of the work setting, and to gain the experience of developing a budget and establishing core strategies to meet long-term fiscal goals for the organization. This opportunity has honed my skills in clear communication, adaptability, and leading a team of diverse people in a volunteer setting.
To expand my network in Silicon Valley, I am now an active member of the Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs of North American (OPEN) – Silicon Valley chapter. I joined the organization to forge relationships and broaden my network with other aspiring entrepreneurs interested in making Pakistan a true capitalist dream.
In sum, I have strived to develop the skills and experience needed to become a successful venture capitalist. I am excited about the prospect of attending Ross and seeking more opportunities there for even further professional and personal development.
