As I wait to hear my name at my MBA graduation ceremony, I realize the power of the McCombs MBA. I have learned my classmates’ stories, motivations, and dreams, and each is a true friend; community is the real value. Connecting with these amazing people through my first-year cohort or through elective courses and clubs, we utilized each other’s strengths to build upon our weaknesses, enhancing our learning experience and embracing the collaborative McCombs community.
With an incredible two years in Austin ending, I have accepted a job at McKinsey in Houston, thanks to the company’s close ties to McCombs recruiting. My career transition from a Marine Corps officer to consultant was supported by the extensive resources and mentoring of second-year students in the McCombs Graduate Consulting Group, who helped me earn my summer internship and subsequent full-time offer. Through micro-consulting projects and access to industry experts via McCombs+, I developed a multidisciplinary perspective to solve real-world business problems by working with local companies. I am excited to take these skills into my consultant career, where, as one piece of the consultant team, I will learn how to adapt my leadership skills to private sector teams while gaining industry experience across a broad array of business functions.
The curriculum at McCombs provided me a perfect bridge between consulting and my long-term goal of driving nuclear energy implementation. My academic advisor helped me develop a curriculum that focused on courses from the CleanTech and Management concentrations, building my credibility and familiarity in nuclear energy, while still preparing me for general management. This knowledge will help me develop a specialty in McKinsey’s Nuclear Power Division, where the skills learned in McComb’s CleanTech concentration will help me develop comprehensive solutions by understanding the industry’s background. I will develop relationships and absorb best practices from C-level executives, which will prepare me to move to the energy industry in the long term, where I will work to promote renewable energy sources by utilizing my McCombs connections in a strategic leadership role at a nuclear energy giant such as Austin Energy or NextEra Energy.
Beyond the classroom, I valued the community and lifelong friendships that my wife and I developed at McCombs. As President of the Nuclear Club, I organized career treks and speaker events, where my classmates and I networked with top industry experts such as Fred Flintstone, CEO of Nuclear Horizons and a fellow McCombs alum. Leveraging my background of leading combat teams as a Marine Corps officer, I brought constructive viewpoints into conversations not only in the classroom, but also with friends during our weekly Thursday Think and Drink meetup at Cheers bar.
Suddenly, I hear my name over the loudspeaker and walk across the stage, waving to my wife, my three kids and my new family of 250 Longhorns. I will utilize the McCombs knowledge and network to effect real impact in the nuclear energy field. Looking back on this experience, choosing McCombs was the best choice for my career and family.
