The MPP curriculum is designed to broaden students’ perspective and sharpen skills necessary for a successful career in public service through a rigorous set of courses that draw on the social sciences but are adapted for action. Please describe how the MPP curriculum at HKS would leverage your distinctive abilities and/or fill gaps in your skill set as you equip yourself to achieve your career goals. (500 word limit) As a future leader in the global widget industry, I will need to understand not only how emerging technologies can be applied in this space, but also how public policy shapes the widget industry across all areas. The MPP Program at HKS is the perfect program to acquire this integrated knowledge of business, public policy, and technology. The Master’s program will provide me the analytical skill set to understand policy design, implementation, and its related economics, which will allow me to develop a more holistic perspective on the relationship between business and government.
The Policy Analysis Exercise is a particularly important part of the MPP curriculum for me to gain hands-on experience in the public sector. After speaking with current students and recent alumni who have similarly moved from private to public-sector careers, this hands-on experience was continuously praised as an integral component in gaining practical experience driving policy creation and impact. I hope to combine my private-sector experience in widgets and the emphasis on quickly testing and iterating on a solution, with a newfound perspective on how policy is implemented in the public sector. I would love to explore how the agile development approach to new technology roll-out can potentially be applied to the development of public sector widget solutions.
I aim to leverage the Policy Area of Concentration in Business and Government to broaden my understanding of emerging technology within a more global context. I hope to take Prof X’s class; xxxxx, enabling me to better understand the interdisciplinary element of introducing new technologies into different types of markets. I also look forward to the opportunity to take part in research opportunities at the Technology and Public Purpose Project through the Belfer Center, which will allow me to deepen my knowledge of different policy research methodologies and bolster my analytical skillset.
Additionally, while I have had financial and quantitative analysis experience in my career to-date, the MPP core curriculum courses Quantitative Analysis and Empirical Methods and Empirical Methods II, will be a vital component for me to build a more rigorous focus on techniques that are required to examine policy issues. I will further pursue my personal career goals through classes such as Prof. x’s xxxxx, where I will learn how xxx policy is both created and implemented at a national level from an expert in the space and Prof. y’s course, xxxxx, which will help contextualize my experience with technology and the widget industry in the framing of current digital government efforts.
Public policy affects every part of the widget industry, and today’s widget landscape is rapidly changing as a result of new technologies, consumer expectations, and evolving policy. The Kennedy School’s MPP program is the perfect preparation for my career at the frontline of widget industry leadership, helping to shape the next revolution in the management of care.
