In my brief four years in the widget industry, I have already witnessed a peak and a trough across two distinct sub-sectors. I began my career in CompanyX’s mixed-use development group. Mixed-use development was booming until COVID hit, which brought developments to a standstill. I then moved to niche widget industry acquisitions. The niche widget industry was propelled by pandemic-induced migration trends away from major cities, though as the pandemic waned, so too did demand for niche widgets. While I learned a tremendous amount in my two product-specific positions, I now seek a generalist widget industry role that will enable me to capitalize on the asynchronous cyclicality across product types rather than being pigeonholed to one sub-sector.
Merging my past experiences with a Kenan-Flagler MBA, I will thrive as an investment associate in a generalist widget industry group, ideally one embedded within a large organization such as Giant Bank 1’s Widget Industry Investing group or Giant Bank 2’s U.S. Widget Partners. Moving up through the ranks of an established generalist widget industry group will enable me to gain experience in a broader array of product types by focusing on the product with the most constructive investment outlook while additionally learning from many experienced industry veterans.
An MBA from Kenan-Flagler would uniquely prepare me for a successful career at a generalist widget industry fund. Kenan-Flagler students have had tremendous success in widget industry case competitions across the country. Competing in case competitions will allow me to stay on top of industry developments while in school. Furthermore, Kenan-Flagler’s expansive widget industry network will enable me to get my foot in the door at top widget industry firms, an industry whose center is in the North Carolina region.
While I expect to move to a generalist widget industry group after graduating, I have always been interested in renewable energy and would pursue a career in that field should my widget industry ambitions not transpire as planned. I recently learned some of the intricacies of solar power project development by spearheading an initiative to install solar panels across my current employer’s widget portfolio. Many of the skills I have developed in the widget industry are transferable to renewable energy project development, such as managing bank financing and outside fundraising processes as well as general financial analysis. Both my parents and grandparents work in renewable energy – my grandfather is the founder of one of the top firms in Iowa – so I have a general fluency in the industry. Kenan-Flagler’s sustainable enterprise concentration would be an optimal supplement to my existing knowledge base to prepare me for a career in renewable energy project development if my widget industry aspirations do not transpire. Ideally, I would like to one day merge both these fields as I have started to do at my current employer, and Kenan-Flagler offers a strong education path for both concentrations.
