What is your favorite quote, and why is it meaningful to you?

Born in New York but having grown up in Asia, I was 14 years old when I moved back to the United States. Consequently, I initially struggled to adjust to American culture, as I was accustomed only to Chinese language and traditions. This struggle would have been even more challenging if it were not for the support of my high school music teacher, Mr. Hatcher.

Mr. Hatcher, who recognized my energy and love of music, encouraged me to take a leadership role in the percussion section of our school’s symphony. Though I had never played drums and questioned my ability to master the instruments, Mr. Hatcher insisted “just follow the words on that blackboard, and you’ll do great.” He was right – by senior year, I became the highest rated percussionist in Washington. Moreover, I felt an immense pride with regards to this accomplishment and realized that Mr. Hatcher’s formula – passion, diligence, and devotion - is not just essential for success, but also for defining oneself.

This is why his words remain so meaningful to me today and why I continue to apply his wisdom every day. For example, by ambitiously pursuing my love of architecture, I discovered how fulfilling it is to be part of the creation process, a realization that has guided both my personal and professional ambitions. Mr. Hatcher’s philosophy benefits me most, however, when applied to personal relationships and the self discovery I have achieved through them. Accordingly, I am still rewarded by the bond forged with Mr. Hatcher today and hope to inspire others as much as he has inspired me.
