By the time I was 15, my family had moved 13 times, provoking in me a deep-seated need to belong.
In college, I took a job at XX, a student-run café, and was quickly invigorated by a sense of purpose and community. I dove in full-time and was promoted to manager, a role I held until graduation. I finally found stability.
After XX, I joined a consulting firm, but missed the dynamic community and authenticity that operations at XX provided. Having recently come out, I sought an environment that aligned with my values, leading me to XX, a start-up brewery founded by XX classmates. There, I embraced the opportunity to create a vibrant community culture and managed operational, financial, hiring, and marketing growth and challenges.
As XX evolved, so did my leadership approach, focusing increasingly on the success of those I lead. I developed an education program, featuring onboarding “beer school” and regular sensory panels that encourage dialogue and investment. This initiative has helped team members advance with several barback “graduates” pursuing formal XX Certifications and one recently taking an Innovation Manager role at a major international brewery. Several years in, these classes are now exclusively run by managers that launched their industry careers as XX barbacks.
