Three Impact Mini-Essays
At Obscure Therapeutics, while advancing a cardiovascular drug program to human clinical trials, the FDA required us to assess the drug’s impact using geriatric [animalx]. Our initial study, using a dosage calibrated for younger monkeys, caused unexpected toxicity. With a tight regulatory deadline looming, the study’s progress – and the program’s future – hung in the balance.
I collaborated with the Genomics team to design a new assay to identify safe toxicity thresholds, and recalibrated the dosage for older test subjects. The revised thresholds eliminated the toxicity to our test subjects and provided robust data, allowing the program to advance to human clinical trials.
This impact is significant for me for both personal and professional reasons: Once approved, this drug will reduce cardiovascular risk for millions of people, providing treatment for a condition that is currently untreatable, decreasing the need for costly surgeries and extending life expectancy. On a personal level, this work resonates with me because my grandfather passed away from cardiac failure. Knowing that this drug can save the lives of future heart patients’ lives makes it even more meaningful to me.
This year at CompanyY, I was part of a team transitioning a new manufacturing process for our sterile products, from development to full-scale production. The work involved long hours for our 50 machine operators: qualifying machinery, running intensive analyses of processes, and troubleshooting unexpected challenges. During these extended shifts, I noticed many operators in sterile environments were required to wear flimsy, sterile footwear that didn’t provide adequate support. When I asked why no one had spoken up about how uncomfortable and painful their shoes were, they told me that they feared backlash from management.
I immediately met with CompanyY’s General Affairs and arranged for the purchase of more supportive shoes for all 300 operators in the factory. To sustain this change, I established a protocol allowing operators to request replacements as needed and promising no retaliation from management. By paying close attention to micro-details of our operators’ experience, I wanted to create an environment where employees feel supported and valued. Fostering a positive and caring workplace ultimately leads to stronger morale and a better work atmosphere for everyone.
When I joined the Medical Aid Initiative at UniversityX, I was struck by the disarray in our warehouse. The initiative partners with UniversityX hospitals to provide unused, life-saving supplies to global health organizations supporting low-income families and refugees in developing countries like Somalia, Laos and Haiti. They submit donation requests, and we sort, package, and send supplies for their medical trips. Unfortunately, delays were frequent, and we often failed to fulfill promises due to poor inventory management. Something had to change.
I recruited a team of volunteers to overhaul the warehouse. Over six months, we sorted 5,000 pounds of supplies into categories like bandages, surgical instruments, and wound care kits. We secured funding for mobile shelving racks and implemented an inventory system to track items, enabling us to quickly locate and allocate supplies. As a result, we quadrupled distribution efficiency, delivering 60% more aid by reducing the time needed to locate the supplies.
Growing up in a developing country, I’ve seen firsthand how scarce medical supplies can be, so knowing my work helped remediate that scarcity gave me a deep sense of fulfillment.
