How do you plan to make specific, meaningful contributions to the Wharton community?
Taking into consideration your background – personal, professional, and/or academic – how do you plan to make specific, meaningful contributions to the Wharton community (400 words)
At Wharton, I plan to contribute to the Education Club, where education-focused Wharton students exchange ideas and learn more about business opportunities through speaker series, small-group discussions, and pitch competitions. Club co-chair Mickey Mouse told me that one of the club’s future goals is to increase engagement with the community by mentoring students in nearby Philadelphia schools. I would like to help launch this initiative, tapping into my experience leading my own mentoring organization, Mouse Career Coaching. Through Mouse, I have coached over 40 under-represented high school and college students, helping them earn college admissions and job offers in the financial services field. I will use these experiences to help Education Club craft effective lesson plans and deliver engaging talks to young students on preparing for college and future careers, furthering the social impact component of the organization.
I will also contribute to Wharton’s Tech Club, where students organize lunch & learn discussions, company site visits, and TechTok podcasts with guest speakers like HotCompany’s COO Donald Duck (Wharton ’0x). Daisy Duck, a current club officer, told me that one barrier for Tech Club is the fee for students to participate in Tech Week, the club’s marquee networking event with employers and tech leaders. Drawing on my experience when I was Director of Strategy at The Ivy Leaguer, my college newspaper, I will outreach to locally-based tech employers like Company1 and Company2 to help sponsor the event. I will tap into the strategies I employed during my undergraduate leadership roles, such as outreaching to local businesses and implementing creative advertisement formats, to help make Wharton Tech Week affordable for all students.
Another way I plan to contribute at Wharton is to help organize Wharton Pub, which brings the whole community together every Thursday for a campus-wide happy hour. Co-president Drake Duck told me how Pub partners with different student groups each week to raise awareness. Drake explained that organizing each happy hour is a huge undertaking, which involves careful budget-management and detailed planning to book a several-hundred-person venue. Having served as MBB Alma Mater Recruiting Captain, I have experience organizing large-scale events and managing budgets. I hope to create a fun, laid-back setting where classmates can meet and enjoy great food. I would also like to collaborate with other student organizations such as Out4Wharton and the Australia and California Clubs, to help Pub expand its reach across the Wharton community.
