Leadership, Essay Sample 3
Leadership
Leadership-Focused: What experiences have shaped who you are, how you invest in others, and what kind of leader you want to become? (up to 250 words)
I’ve worked nearly every role at XX and often return to the front of the house to build relationships and credibility with the team. As these opportunities have grown rarer, I’ve found new ways to stay connected.
Since becoming CEO, I write personalized letters to each employee on their work anniversary, sharing specific anecdotes and recognizing their growth. I am rewarded and humbled when employees save letters in their lockers, re-reading for a pick-me-up on a bad day. This tradition has taught me that genuine connection and recognition are key motivators, fostering strong, supportive communities and strengthening my leadership.
My experience has led me to prioritize training new managers on personalized recognition to develop strong connections with their team. I emphasize positive impact over any specific routines. During training sessions, I prompt managers to recall impactful recognition in their careers and plan how to implement these in their teams. One manager hosts monthly “no-beer” happy hours capped with silly poses at a local photobooth, while another spotlights team members (and their pets) in weekly update emails.
As the scale of my leadership continues to grow, I am committed to creating a culture that rewards and inspires managers to connect with their team, instilling a sense of belonging. My letter-writing will evolve to acknowledge team and department achievements, and I will strive to experience at least one “day in the life” of each role for which I’m responsible — insights from which will inform strategy and decision-making. In any setting, my mission is to lead with presence, gratitude, and respect, creating a tangible, lasting impact.
