Our housing arrangement was not ideal; four adult strangers required to share a two-bedroom apartment made for very cramped living conditions. When we weren’t working long hours, we were all together in the apartment. Each came from a different walk of life, so it didn’t take long for frustrations to flare.
The father from southern California was incredibly supportive of everyone, always seeking to help and listen. It was a powerful moment when he broke down from missing his family - I’ll always remember the heartache he showed.
Our first generation American, Jose, demonstrated a relentless work ethic everyday – he may be the hardest worker I’ve known. Jose’s philosophy was “Why complain? Do something about it”. His example changed my view on perseverance; motivating me to never leave tasks undone or words unsaid.
The orphan from Texas had a heartbreaking story, but gave me a deeper appreciation for my family and support network, and what can be taken in an instant.
My worldview shifted during that short, turbulent, but incredibly eye-opening summer. I had been so focused on what was affecting me; this experience is when I truly empathized with the struggles that people often hide internally.
