MIT LGO Personal Statement
The rhythmic beep of my wife’s insulin pump is a comforting reminder of technology’s true impact. Rooted in this and the human centric challenge of Army leadership, I seek admission as an LGO EECS fellow focused on applying bio-sensors, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence to aid human performance.
Since age 15, my wife has managed diabetes with a standard blood glucose meter, an insulin injection pen, and many finger pricks. Throughout, I felt largely helpless; quick to assist or care, yet powerless to prevent. As she started using a bio-sensor, data app, apple watch, and insulin pump, helplessness was replaced by empowerment. The seamless, user-focused design helped analyze trends, set predictive analysis and transmit data. Inspired, I leveraged bio-sensors innovating soldier self-awareness—heart rate, breath control, stress management—in my 130 soldier Infantry Company. Although rudimentary in nature, I recognized the power of human performance data in any industry focused on efficiency, safety, and results. I also incorporated basic augmented-reality training aids, yet I visualize deeper integration of smart bio-sensors and augmented-reality to shape human-machine interaction.
I’ve always been intrigued by innovative technologies that challenge current value propositions. During EE studies at West Point, I engaged with HBS professor Clayton Christensen and published research on the disruptive nature of artificially intelligent robotics in the military, medical, and manufacturing industries. Similarly, smart bio-sensors promise a disruptive evolution across domains. At LGO, I will focus on applying artificially intelligent bio-sensors to increase human performance and shape interaction with technology. I bring performance-oriented, operational experience to CSAIL and the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies healthcare and defense research.
Following LGO, I will continue leading as a product or program manager at Amazon, Johnson & Johnson, or Sanofi. These companies, similar to LGO, lead interdisciplinary efforts and understand the importance of people in the technology equation.
